When you stay with us at Heidefee, you're not tucked away somewhere out in the open heath – you're right in the middle of Wietzendorf, a proper village with everything you need for a relaxed holiday. No need to stock up before you arrive, no daily drive to the next bigger town: a bakery, a discount supermarket, a pharmacy, an ice cream parlour and even a 24-hour vending station for eggs and sausages are all within walking distance. Add to that playgrounds for the kids, a paddling spot to cool off, a historic town hall, a small bike workshop and a calendar of festivals that runs from the Easter bonfire all the way to the Christmas market. Many of our guests are surprised at first by just how much is packed into a village this size. Wietzendorf looks quiet at first glance, but turns out to be a small self-sufficient village once you look closer: if you wanted to, you could spend your entire stay here without ever needing the car just for everyday errands – and still have something different to do every day, from the playground to the bike workshop.

🛒 Everyday Errands & Shopping: No Need to Stock Up

Wietzendorf isn't just a cluster of holiday homes on the edge of the heath – it's a real, living village with its own infrastructure. First-time visitors are often surprised how much is packed into such a small area. A short walk is all it takes for your everyday shopping: the Netto discount supermarket and the NP-Markt Wietzendorf cover the classic weekend shop, so you don't need to drive to the next small town just to pick up basics. For breakfast and coffee breaks, there's Bäckerei Schlumbohm and Bäckerei Meyer – the latter even bakes fresh, warm bread rolls on Sundays, handy if Saturday's shop wasn't quite enough or you simply fancy a long Sunday breakfast on the veranda. For meat, sausages and your barbecue evening at the house, Fleischerei und Partyservice Hestermann is the go-to address in the village.

You don't need to drive to a bigger town for anything else either: the Apotheke Wietzendorf (pharmacy) takes care of prescriptions and your travel first-aid kit, Volksbank Lüneburger Heide eG has a branch right here, and you can send or collect parcels easily at the Packstation 701 parcel locker.

One small extra that surprises many guests, and one we love telling people about: right in the village centre, barely 600 metres from the house, there are several 24-hour vending machines where you can buy fresh eggs, sausages, potatoes and other regional produce around the clock. Handy when hunger strikes late in the evening or early in the morning, after the shops have closed or before they've opened – a little bit of round-the-clock self-sufficiency that you don't find everywhere.

🍕 Food, Drink, and the Ice Cream Question

If you don't feel like cooking one evening, you'll find plenty right in the village too. For pizza and pasta, there's Bistro Pizzeria Phoenix and Pizza Garten Wietzendorf – both good options for a relaxed evening without anyone having to stand at the stove, and both also deliver straight to your door at the holiday home. And for an afternoon out with the kids, or without, there's Eisdiele Dal Bo, now located where the former Eisdiele Martini used to be – just around 600 metres from the house, an easy few minutes on foot.

For a more substantial meal with proper table service, Brammers Landhotel is the address just outside the immediate village centre, firmly part of Wietzendorf's dining scene. It's also a popular rest stop on the area's cycling routes, if you've earned yourself a hot meal after a longer ride.

⚽ Fun and Family, Right on Your Doorstep

By far the biggest draw for families is just three kilometres away: Südsee-Camp with its Piratennest (pirate's nest) play area, open year-round and accessible to day visitors as well. Right in the village itself, there are also plenty of playgrounds – one of them, the playground by the sports field, is only about 600 metres from the house and reachable on foot in a few minutes – plus a football pitch with basketball hoops and a small skatepark for the older kids, and the Wassertretstelle freie NATUR paddling spot for a quick, refreshing cool-down, no trip to an outdoor pool required. And if you need bikes for a tour through the heath or along the marked cycling routes around Wietzendorf: Fahrradscheune Wietzendorf, less than a ten-minute walk from the house, rents out bikes and e-bikes for the whole family and, if needed, takes care of small repairs on the spot in its own workshop. Right nearby, on Kampstraße near the sports hall, the Wietzendorfer Moor nature reserve begins – a roughly 4-kilometre loop trail takes you along a sandy path (also marked as a cycle route) through moorland and wet meadows, past a small nature trail with information boards. If you're lucky, you might spot lapwings, snipe or the rare curlew along the way – a peaceful contrast to the lively family programme in the village.

🏛️ History You Can Touch: Town Hall, Peetshof and St. Jakobi

If you enjoy a quieter, more historic kind of stroll, Wietzendorf has that too. The Rathaus (town hall) isn't just the seat of local government – it's also home to the Lesestube im Rathaus, a small, cosy reading room, perfect for a quiet afternoon if a rain shower rolls through. Right on the town hall square there's also a small, ground-level natural fountain where little ones especially love to splash about on warm days, plus a Naturpark bike service station for a quick fix before you head back out on your ride. A walk through the village centre also takes you past the Peetshof farmstead and St. Jakobi church, two stops that combine wonderfully into a short historical stroll, no car and no rush required. Don't miss the Imker-Denkmal (beekeeper monument) by the Friedenseiche (peace oak) right in the village centre either: a bronze figure of a beekeeper – pipe, hat and traditional wicker beehive included – created in 1996 by a sculptor from Bremen and funded entirely through donations. It's the official emblem of our "honey village" and makes for a lovely photo stop between the town hall and the Peetshof.

For anyone travelling with three generations under one roof: it's exactly these short, relaxed distances in the village that make Wietzendorf pleasant for mixed groups too – grandparents can easily manage a gentle stroll to the town hall, while the younger ones carry on to the playground afterwards. 🧰 Practical Things You Only Need When You Need Them

Not every holiday goes perfectly smoothly – and Wietzendorf has that covered too, without you having to drive to the next bigger town. The dental practice of Carolin Westendorff-Eggers, the doctor's practice of Annette Bischoff-Renken (opposite the town hall) and the Wietzendorf police station are all right here, as is Wietzendorf Touristik, the local tourist office – the central point of contact for current notices, event dates and any small questions about the village, and incidentally also the publisher of the region's annual cycling route flyer. If you're travelling by electric car, you'll find a charging point right in the village at the SVO Vertrieb Charging Station, no detour required.

Small things like these often only matter once you actually need them – and that's exactly when it's good to know you don't have to plan a longer trip for it, because everything is within a few minutes' walk.

🎉 Festivals Throughout the Year: From Easter to the Christmas Market

Wietzendorf doesn't just go about its everyday business – it loves to celebrate too, with occasions throughout the year that guests and locals enjoy alike. In spring, the Osterfeuer (Easter bonfire) with an egg hunt for the children invites everyone to a shared Easter evening in the village, a lovely family experience if you're staying with us at that time of year. In June, the village holds its Schützenfest (marksmen's festival), and in August the Bürgermeisterradtour (mayor's bike tour) draws cycling fans from the whole area. If you fancy getting on your own bike, you can also join one of the two Volksradfahren events across the Munster and Bergen military training areas, opened to cyclists once a year.

The short distances in the village suit very different kinds of guests. If you're here in Workation mode, you can pop out to the bakery on your lunch break or walk to the pizzeria in the evening without needing the car, instead of spending the whole day indoors.
