🚴 Cycling from Wietzendorf: Two House Routes, One Long-Distance Trail, and Everything You Need

One of the biggest advantages of our holiday home only becomes obvious once you don't get in the car: for a proper bike ride through the Lüneburg Heath, you don't need to drive anywhere first. Two fully signposted themed routes start right at the car park by Wietzendorf's town hall, Hauptstraße 12 – a short walk from the front door. Add to that Fahrradscheune Wietzendorf, which rents out bikes and e-bikes for the whole family, and the HeidekreisTour, a large staged long-distance cycle network you can keep following for days without ever leaving the region. In this article, we'll walk you through all three – plus one important safety note you should know before riding a particular stretch.

🛣️ Route 1: "In the Footsteps of the Postmaster" (Tour 14)

At 48.06 km and around 258 metres of elevation gain, this route's main leg is the more demanding of the two house routes, and you should plan for around 5 hours of actual riding time. Start and finish is the car park by Wietzendorf's town hall. Its theme: Francesco Maria Capellini, known as Stechinelli, who became Postmaster General in 1678 and had already set up Wietzendorf's first post station back in 1675 – a bit of postal history you can experience at several stops along the way.

The route is part of a roughly 165 km network of themed routes with several selectable partial legs (including routes A1, C1, D1 and F), all of which also start in Wietzendorf – so if you don't fancy the full 48 km right away, you can pick a shorter leg and pick up the rest another day. Along the way you'll pass sights such as the Peetshof farmstead, St. Jakobi church, the Waldarbeitermuseum (forestry workers' museum) in Becklingen (No. 7), and the Heilige Eiche (Holy Oak) near Müden an der Örtze. Brammers Landhotel makes a good stop for a break along the route.

🛣️ Route 2: "Wietzendorfer Ring" (Tour 15)

The second house route also starts at Wietzendorf's town hall and, at around 43 km (42.25 km according to the official cycling route flyer, roughly 2 hours 55 minutes, 217 metres of elevation gain), is the shorter and flatter of the two options. It runs via Meinholz, Suroide, Dehnernbockel, Klein Amerika, Marbostel and Reiningen back to Wietzendorf. If that's not enough for you, around 40 km of additional excursion and return routes connect onto the ring.

The Wietzendorfer Ring is part of a village-renewal project connecting the core village with all the surrounding "WietzenDörfer" hamlets, and comes with its own educational stops for children along the way – a nice extra if you're travelling with family. The nicest rest stop on the route is the Kiesteich (gravel pit lake) in Reiningen, and Brammers Landhotel is a good option here too if you fancy a bite to eat. Also worth seeing: the Peetshof, St. Jakobi church, the Imker-Denkmal (beekeeper monument), the Erlebnisstation Meinholz, and the Wietzenbruch and Wildes Moor nature reserves – two spots that also feature in our article on Hidden Gems Off the Tourist Trail.

🗺️ Riding Further: The HeidekreisTour

If the house routes leave you wanting more, you don't have to start from scratch: Wietzendorf lies on the HeidekreisTour, an ADFC-certified long-distance cycle route with 13 stages and 236 km in total, starting in Schneverdingen. The individual stages are nicely sized at 11.7 to 26 km each, including the Munster–Wietzendorf stage at 20.9 km, which connects Wietzendorf directly to the larger regional cycling network.

The tour is self-guided: downloadable tour data is available at tourinfra.com, along with a free printed brochure, and your luggage can be transported between accommodations so you don't have to carry everything yourself. 🚵 Even More Routes Nearby

Beyond the two house routes and the HeidekreisTour, the neighbouring villages offer a good number of further, well-signposted cycling routes – among them Schneverdingen, Bispingen, Neuenkirchen and Soltau, plus Munster's "Örtzeweg" (10.84 km) and routes via Walsrode all the way to Celle and Verden. 👥 Who Benefits Most

The short distance between the holiday home and the starting point makes both house routes appealing even for a spontaneous afternoon, with no drive to a starting point elsewhere required. Families benefit especially from the Wietzendorfer Ring, with its educational stops for children and the Kiesteich in Reiningen as a rest stop, while more sporty guests can rack up more kilometres and elevation on the "In the Footsteps of the Postmaster" route or on the HeidekreisTour itself.
