There's a moment that always comes on day two of the holiday. The house has been explored, so has the garden, the weather's doing whatever it wants – and then comes the question: "So what are we doing today?"

This article is for exactly that moment. Not a generic list of Heath attractions, but destinations with measured distances from our front door on Hauptstraße. From the playground around the corner to a theme park three-quarters of an hour away. For sunny days, for rainy days, and for the days when the kids simply need to run wild.

We've visited most of these destinations ourselves – where we write "we've been there ourselves", we mean it literally. For the rest, we go by what the operators state.

We'll start right on our doorstep, then move on to the big parks, then to the action cluster in Bispingen – and finish with the things that don't cost a thing.

🏝️ Right on Our Doorstep: Südsee-Camp (3 km)

Three kilometres. That's the shortest route to a major leisure destination anywhere in this article – and the reason we're starting here.

In summer, the water area is the main draw. But the real hidden gem is the Piratennest: an indoor play hall covering around 800 square metres, with a pirate ship, a doughnut slide, a climbing wall, a multi-storey balance course and trampolines that control video games. There's a separate play island for the very youngest.

The most important part: you don't have to be camping there. Day visitors can come in, year-round, without booking ahead. Hardly anyone knows this – and it makes the Piratennest the best bad-weather option within reach.

And now the part parents will love: you don't have to join in. Around the play area there's seating where you can watch and enjoy a coffee in peace while the kids burn off energy. As long as you don't step onto the play area yourself, accompanying adults don't pay admission either.

Two more things for the bag: entry is sock-only, so grip socks come in handy. And children under seven need an accompanying adult inside.

We've been there ourselves and send guests there regularly – it's the destination we recommend most often, simply because it's so close.

🦌 The Big Classics: Wildlife and Theme Parks

The destinations that fill a whole day. Listed by distance, so you can plan around them.

🦊 Wildpark Müden (14 km) – The closest wildlife park, and our tip for the first outing. Smaller and quieter than the big parks, but relaxed and free of crowds. Half a day is plenty, and for younger children that's exactly the right dose. Anyone who's ever carried an overtired four-year-old through a theme park at 3pm knows what we mean.

The highlight for kids is clearly hand-feeding the goats – it still works on the third visit. The larger animals, such as elk and deer, have feeding times at set hours. These are worth catching, because the animals come right up to the fence. Ask at the entrance for the times and plan your visit around them. We've been there ourselves; for us it's the most underrated park in the region.

🎢 Heide Park Resort Soltau (18 km) – Germany's second-largest theme park, and the reason many families come to the Heath in the first place. Worth knowing: the park isn't just for roller-coaster fans. There are big rides for the brave and designated areas for younger children. Plan for a full day – half-measures don't pay off here, as we've found on our own visits. Tickets are usually cheaper booked online than bought at the gate.

🦜 Weltvogelpark Walsrode (World Bird Park) (34 km) – The largest bird park in the world, with flight shows, penguin feeding and a walk-through free-flight hall. Noticeably calmer than the two action parks, which makes it a good fit for younger children, or for the day after Heide Park when everyone's still worn out. And a note from experience: the flight show is the highlight of the day – it's the first thing our daughter mentions when she thinks of the park. Check the entrance for start times and plan your route around it so you don't miss it. We've been there ourselves and would plan the day exactly the same way again.

🦁 Serengeti-Park Hodenhagen (41 km) – The most exciting destination for kids on this list: you drive the safari through the enclosures in your own car. A rhinoceros right by the passenger door – that's the story they'll still be telling weeks later. One detail that will spare you an unpleasant surprise: convertibles and vehicles with soft tops aren't allowed on the safari route. If that's what you're travelling in, you can switch to the safari buses instead – best to check this in advance. We've done the safari ourselves; the drive through the enclosures really is what kids remember longest.

🎢 The Full-Day Trip: Rasti-Land Salzhemmendorf (approx. 120 km)

Here we briefly leave the near-distance logic of this list: Rasti-Land is around 120 km away with a driving time of roughly 90 minutes, noticeably further than every other destination in this article. We still think it belongs here – as a deliberate full-day trip, not a casual add-on.

🎢 Rasti-Land Salzhemmendorf – The reason we recommend it despite the distance: unlike at Heide Park, most attractions here are open to younger kids too. Our nine-year-old daughter was able to ride everything with us – at Heide Park, by contrast, plenty of rides are off-limits to her because of age or height restrictions. For families with kids roughly between 6 and 12, that's a real difference. Her favourites were the log flume, the wild water ride, the tyre sledge run, the Blizzard bob-kart track and the ropes course. We've been there ourselves and deliberately plan a whole day around it – with a 90-minute drive, anything less isn't worth it.

⚡ Bispingen (26 km): the Heath's Action Cluster

If you only plan one action-packed day, make it this one. Several major attractions sit side by side within a few square kilometres in Bispingen – and the best part: almost everything is under cover. Head here on a rainy day and you won't have to write the day off.

26 kilometres from the cottage, so a good half-hour's drive. You can combine two destinations in one day without rushing.

⛷️ SnowWorld Bispingen – Skiing in the Heath, year-round, on around 300 metres of slope. Just the idea is enough for many kids: snow in August, half an hour from the front door. Beginner courses and equipment hire are available on site, and no prior experience is needed – we've been there ourselves and went with zero skiing experience. The resort also includes Modellbauwelten, a model railway exhibition with over 500 model trains – surprisingly good for kids who aren't into skiing – as well as an adventure golf course.

🏎️ Ralf Schumacher Kartcenter – Indoor and outdoor tracks plus bowling in the same place, so it works in any weather. And it's worth checking the age limits here, because they're lower than most people think:

• From age 3 to 4: electric karts on a small course
• From age 5: electric karts on the 200-metre track
• From age 8 and a minimum height of 1.35 m: kids' karts on the indoor track
• From age 12 and a minimum height of 1.55 m: the full-size karts, indoors and outdoors

There's also a dedicated kart school for 8- to 12-year-olds. Height limits are strictly enforced – better to measure beforehand than have a disappointed child on site. We've been there ourselves; the low age limit on the electric karts surprises most parents.

🕹️ BattleKart Bispingen – Electric karts on a track with game elements projected onto it. The result is that you drive through a video game, with items to collect and effects along the track. The highlight of the day for older kids and teenagers – and, honestly, for most parents too.

🔦 Adventure District – The indoor destination, fully under cover and the best option for a rainy afternoon. On offer: 3D blacklight mini-golf with 18 holes across five themed worlds from deep sea to outer space, laser tag from age 6, a laser maze where you weave through laser beams without touching them, a 3D labyrinth, the reaction game LightJumper, and a 3D TrickArt photo world. Half a day disappears here without anyone looking outside.

🤸 Abenteuerland Bispingen – Around 2,000 square metres of trampoline park with 14 stations: a ninja course, a high-ropes course with a 55-metre zipline, a football air court, trapeze jumps, an airbag jump and interactive video-game trampolines. There are dedicated activities for the very youngest, from around age three. Perfect for wearing kids out before heading back to the cottage – they sleep brilliantly afterwards. We've tried this ourselves and can confirm it.

🏍️ Quad Bike Track at Brunausee – A 500-metre sand track where kids from age 8 can drive themselves. Short, but a big moment: the first time on the throttle themselves. Combines well with an afternoon at Brunausee.

🚂 Heide-Express – A historic narrow-gauge railway that runs through the Heath. Quieter than everything else in this section, and exactly for that reason a good balance when a day could use less adrenaline. Especially memorable for younger children – a real steam or diesel train beats any toy.

🌿 Out and About: Experiencing the Heath for Free

So the holiday doesn't consist only of paid attractions – and so the budget doesn't run dry after three days.

The Heidschnuckenweg trail runs directly through our region. You don't need to walk a full stage: pick a short stretch, two to three kilometres is plenty with kids. If you come across a flock of heath sheep along the way, that's the holiday moment everyone remembers – for city kids, a flock of sheep out in the open is a small event in itself. We've walked the trail ourselves many times and are happy to recommend a stretch that suits your children's age and pace – just ask us when you arrive.

The paths across the Heath are mostly flat, which makes cycling with younger children relaxed too. And for anyone who prefers to take it easy: horse-drawn carriage rides through the Heath are offered at several places in the region.

Worth mentioning: the nature park practically starts on our doorstep. For an afternoon outdoors, you don't need to drive anywhere at all – you'll find a few glimpses of it in our photo gallery.

🌧️ When It Rains: the Plan for Foul Weather

Northern Germany, summer, rain – it comes with the territory. But a rainy day here isn't a wasted day. Three options, from near to far:

No long drive needed: the Piratennest at Südsee-Camp, three kilometres away. The only indoor option you can more or less walk to.

Half an hour: the full indoor line-up in Bispingen – Adventure District, Abenteuerland, the Kartcenter, SnowWorld. Together, enough to fill several rainy days.

Nearby: the Therme Soltau spa (15 km) with its adventure pool area – water from the inside is a lot more pleasant than water from above. For kids, the 82-metre giant slide is the argument that settles it. And the spa has a retractable roof: it opens on hot days, so you're swimming practically outdoors – which makes it a worthwhile destination in the best weather too, not just a rainy-day fallback. We've been here ourselves as well; it's our go-to tip whenever guests ask what to do during a stretch of steady rain.

And then there's the fourth option, which we think is the most honest one: just stay put. Light the wood stove, get the games out, cook together in the spacious kitchen. Some of our guests tell us afterwards that this was exactly the day they liked best. Not every holiday day needs a plan.

🎒 Good to Know Before You Set Off

A few things that make the difference between a relaxed day out and an exhausting one.

Measure height beforehand. For karts and some attractions, it's height rather than age that decides. 1.35 m and 1.55 m are the two marks that matter. Ten seconds with a tape measure at the cottage saves a disappointed child at the ticket counter.

Buy tickets online. At the big parks, this is usually cheaper than buying on site, and you skip the queue. It's especially worth it during the summer holidays and on public holidays.

Don't schedule two big destinations in one day. Heide Park, Serengeti-Park and Rasti-Land are each full-day destinations in their own right. Try to combine several of them in one day and you'll end up not really enjoying any of them. The smaller destinations in Bispingen, on the other hand, combine well in pairs.

Bring a change of clothes. Sounds obvious, but at the quad bike track, the wading spot and the spa, a spare set of clothing is worth its weight in gold – and the dryer at the cottage takes care of the rest.

Leave one day free. This is our most important tip. Plan every single holiday day and you'll go home more exhausted than when you arrived. A day with no programme – garden, the playground around the corner, the ice cream parlour in the village – is often the one the kids remember most fondly.

📅 Three Sample Days to Copy

The action day for older kids: morning in Bispingen, the Kartcenter or BattleKart, a midday break, laser tag at Adventure District in the afternoon. By evening nobody wants to go anywhere else voluntarily – grill in the garden.

The quiet day with younger kids: Wildpark Müden in the morning, back to the cottage at midday for nap time, the Piratennest or the garden in the afternoon. Short distances, no rush, everyone in a good mood.

The rainy day: Adventure District in the morning, Therme Soltau spa in the afternoon – or the other way round. Back to the fire in the evening. By the end of the day, nobody will have noticed it rained at all.

🏠 Why a Holiday Cottage Works Better for Families

After a few days out and about with kids, you notice what really matters.

A proper kitchen means eating when the kids are actually hungry – not when the hotel restaurant opens. Separate bedrooms mean you still get an evening to yourselves as parents once the kids are asleep. A garden means kids can go outside without anyone having to go with them. And space for up to eight people means grandparents or a friend's family can come along – which makes the holiday more relaxed for everyone.

Then there's the location: from Wietzendorf, most destinations on this list are within three-quarters of an hour at most – only the full-day trip to Rasti-Land takes around 90 minutes. After a full day out, you're not heading back to a hotel room, but to a quiet house with a veranda, balcony and wood stove.

💡 In Short

Around Wietzendorf you'll find skiing in summer, a safari in your own car, laser tag, trampoline halls, kart tracks for three-year-olds, and an indoor playground three kilometres away. Almost all of it within 45 minutes at most, plus a worthwhile full-day trip to Rasti-Land – and there's something for every kind of weather.

The best part: in the evening you drive back into the Heath, where it goes quiet.
